Project Synopsis: Challenge/Opportunity
Climate Steps is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing climate change through community engagement and education. With a mission to guide individuals and organizations toward sustainable practices, such as solar adoption, Climate Steps has successfully built a vibrant community - international in scale. It gently mentors (it is not one-on-one assigned mentoring) people by providing science-based recommendations through Facebook, Instagram, and presentations to organizations and schools and holding conversations with the user at that time. However, as the organization expands and makes more specific its mentoring activities with the aim to provide some through digital platforms on its website (with signed waivers)—there are significant challenges related to liability and risk management. For instance, a recommendation through online discussion for people (in general) to install solar, geothermal, green roofs, heat pumps, or wind power may result in a homeowner's inability to sell a house within typical market value later. Our current lack of a structured framework to navigate these risks, beyond our current disclaimer, raises concerns about potential legal ramifications and the quality of advice provided by volunteer mentors. This gap not only jeopardizes the organization’s reputation but also exposes it to possible lawsuits resulting from misinformation or inadequate guidance. The potential for lawsuits requires liability insurance for the Board and more, depending on standard practice.
Project Synopsis: Activities/Actions Required
  1. The project will involve a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Students will conduct literature reviews on relevant, legal framework structures for risk, analyze existing policies of comparable organizations, and, when relevant, gather stakeholder feedback (CSteps staff, users, and potential funders) through surveys or interviews. They will utilize SWOT analysis to evaluate Climate Steps' current and planned mentoring practices and identify potential risks. The analysis, which should focus on the United States legal system only, will culminate in the deliverables of:
    1. Risk assessment report, on the likelihood of these risks for this type of nonprofit.
    2. Sample risk framework structures, summarized for similar organizations, for the Board's review.
    3. A risk control plan, which will include recommended policy language, a suggested navigation flow chart for risks events, and guidelines, and
    4. Recommended types of liability insurance, if needed.
  2. Additionally, students will create a user-friendly “safe mentoring” operating guide, incorporating UX/UI principles to ensure accessibility for volunteer mentors, including those for whom English is a second language/or from another country.
  3. Throughout the project, collaborative meetings among students, with Climate Steps staff/volunteers, and with others will facilitate peer learning and iterative feedback, enhancing the final deliverables.
Project Synopsis: Expected Results
For students
  • Expected outcomes include a student's comprehensive understanding of legal and ethical implications surrounding mentoring in nonprofits, as well as the ability to develop practical policy recommendations.
  • Students will learn to assess stakeholder impacts/risks, enhancing their analytical skills and understanding of risk management.
For Climate Steps
  • Business value will be achieved through the creation of actionable deliverables that will strengthen Climate Steps' mentoring and legal framework, ultimately improving stakeholder trust and engagement.
SMART goals include: 1) completion of a risk assessment report by the end of the first month; 2) development of policy recommendations (a risk control plan and recommended types of insurance, if needed) by the six-week mark; 3) finalization of the “safe mentoring” operating guide by the end of the project; and 4) presentation of findings to Climate Steps stakeholders.
